Info

Covering over 9,000 square kilometers, Tsavo West National Park is one of Kenya’s most scenic and diverse reserves, known for its dramatic landscapes and unique natural attractions. From rolling volcanic hills and lava flows to lush oases and open savannahs, the park offers a striking contrast to the vast plains of Tsavo East.

Wildlife viewing is rewarding, with chances to see elephants, lions, leopards, cheetahs, buffalo, giraffes, zebras, hippos, crocodiles, and over 600 species of birds. The park is also home to endangered species such as the black rhino, which is protected within a fenced sanctuary.

Tsavo West is particularly famous for its Mzima Springs, a series of natural springs where visitors can watch hippos and crocodiles in crystal-clear waters, and the Shetani Lava Flow, a dramatic black expanse of volcanic rock that showcases the region’s fiery past.

Visitors can enjoy a variety of activities and tour types, including:

  • Game Drives (Morning, Afternoon & Full Day) – Explore diverse habitats with expert rangers.
  • Guided Bush Walks – Discover plants, birds, and smaller wildlife on foot in designated areas.
  • Mzima Springs Visits – See hippos, crocodiles, and fish from an underwater viewing chamber.
  • Birdwatching Tours – Spot rare and migratory species across wetlands, forests, and savannahs.
  • Rhino Sanctuary Visits – View endangered black rhinos in their protected habitat.
  • Shetani Lava Flow Exploration – Witness one of the park’s most dramatic geological features.
  • Scenic Photography Safaris – Capture rugged landscapes, wildlife, and volcanic backdrops.

Accessible from both Nairobi and Mombasa, Tsavo West is often combined with Tsavo East for a complete safari experience. The best time to visit is during the dry seasons (June to October and January to February), when animals are concentrated around water sources.

With its rich mix of wildlife, striking natural landmarks, and varied landscapes, Tsavo West National Park offers an unforgettable safari that blends adventure, photography, and cultural discovery in one of Kenya’s most diverse wilderness areas.
